A Harmonious Diversity
Kutch, Gujarat
Kutch is a region of tidal mudflats, brown desolations flocked with saline efflorescence, with tracks of camel caravans and humans. The sacred and profane, beautiful and barren, colour and vistas of the people and the stories, customs, and traditions that migrated with them spread through the region's lengths and breadths. The need to express, a break from the mundane landscapes refined crafts and practices in the region that translated into an occupation. A strong influence of place, time and material has impacted the practices, patterns and motifs and the buildings in the region.
A study spread across the region's expanse collating the influence and spatial requirements of occupation needs on the built environment. Understanding the role of the built and unbuilt environment in terms of planning, space quality, and physical requirements by mapping the various activities and processes involved behind the craft responding and coexisting with the region's ecology and communities.
The crafts became an identity, skills a tool and product a symbol.
