The report was submitted as an output of the grant proposal for Vernacular Architecture Group, London. The proposal aimed at documenting and studying the "architecture of the cold desert: domestic houses of the Zanskar valley | Ladakh ".

The documentation entails studying the vernacular building processes of domestic buildings in the Himalayan cold desert. The idea is to understand the fundamental building blocks for construction in a region with limited resources and extreme climatic conditions. The challenges offered by the terrain and lack of connectivity instinctively reduce the possibility of human habitation. However, centuries-old domestic settlements in these regions have existed and thrived. The study aims to document the planning principles, material application and overall ecological response for human life to exist and flourish in the region.
