Generalised as the white rann, the region of kutch acquires various shapes and forms as one moves across the region. With a small portion as the rann, devoid of vegetation transforms into the Banni Grasslands; the plains transforms into mountain ranges reducing to the coast as you move along.
Changing landscapes, varying geographies and the cultural fabric of Kutch has an impact on the built and unbuilt environment of the regions. As one traverse from affluent coastal towns to the pastoral grazing grounds and deserts, one can witness a drastic change in the building typologies, settlement patterns and cultural landscapes. Courtyard houses with yarns dyed and drying in the south and centre, up north small circular hutments were seen, scattered around a fenced area with women sitting in the shade of the roof embroidering the wedding trousseau.
