The general consensus of the population of the region are traditionally shepherds belonging to Gujjar, Gaddi, Kinnaura and Lahula tribes, each eventually belonging to specific geographical regions of the state of Himachal Pradesh. The gaddi tribe have made Kangra their home. The caste of the tribesman can be identified based by the dressing style of that tribesman. The primary occupation of the tribe is rearing goats and sheep’s. The gaddi tribe usually rears gaddi and tanpur breeds of sheep, that are known for the quality of wool it provides. Each gaddi herd has a gaddi dog, that is there to protect the herd.
