Kangra lies in the sub-tropical, sub-humid climatic zone. Dharamshala lies in a wet temperate zone. The altitude varies from 500 to 5000 meters above the mean sea level. It has a cool and pleasant climate because of its proximity to the pine covered hills. The gaddi tribe have made Kangra their home. They have settled in lower reaches of the Dhauladhar range. The community migrate from high pastures to low pastures of the Dhauladhar ranges, during the year. The lower altitudes have stepped farming to conventional farming in the lowlands. The higher reaches of the range has snow capped mountains, however the snow isn't perennial.
