Island Ecologies

Lakshadweep

A study centered on the archipelago in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep is a group of atolls and coral reefs (the name means "Hundred Thousand Islands" in the Malayalam language and Sanskrit). The islands' higher eastern sides are suited for human habitation, while the low-lying lagoons on the western sides protect the inhabitants from the southwest monsoon. The soils of Lakshadweep are generally sandy, derived from the coral.

The study's objective is to understand island ecologies, focusing on local building materials available mainly on the island and their applications.
